How did I get a puncture wound on my finger?

I poked my finger with a greasy rusty nail-like thing and got a puncture wound. It went in about a 1/4 way in my big middle finger on the left hand. I had to pull it out. It started bleeding. That happened at 8 am, at 2 pm my finger stared swelling, and the pain is past my wrist.
