Their Words: Offering weekly Jazz Vespers services along with social and cultural programs, Saint Peter’s Church has supported the needs of many musicians and their families for nearly 50 years. Since 1965, the church has been a spiritual home for the jazz community in New York, hosting countless memorial services for luminaries such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Bassist and composer Ike Sturm serves as the music director for the jazz ministry.
Our Words: St. Peter's is a church in Midtown Manhattan that offers a great setting to hear live jazz. It has a much bigger seating capacity than your usual jazz club, as well as more room in the stage area, allowing for large ensembles to perform there. Among those who have performed there are Clark Terry, Jay Leonhart, Jon Gordon, Helen Sung and Donny McCaslin, to name a few.
