Borough: Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Where: 55 Christopher St.
Their Words: A prohibition era dive bar with incredible live jazz, funk, and blues nightly in Greenwich village.
Our Words: This former speakeasy has been around since 1919, and is loaded with quality and character. Dave Binney, Chris Tarry, Dan Weiss, Wayne Krantz, and Jean-Michel Pilc are all regular performers at the 55 Bar, a narrow space with some great Christmas lights. For some of the bigger artists, be prepared to wait in a line that sometimes goes around the block, so show up early.
The house piano is a Fender Rhodes which provides for some great new sounds from pianists you may have been used to seeing play an upright or grand.
Music Every Night?: Yes, although about half the time is contemporary jazz and improvised music, while the other half is blues guitar and vocal bands, so definitely check the calendar. Set times always vary.
Capacity: 70 seated
Reservations: No
Age Restriction: All ages (sometimes 21+ for late shows / bar seating)
Food / Drink: loaded bar
