Bassist Ben Allison has been a mainstay in New York City for longer than you'd realize, because he's always coming out with the freshest of albums and bands. That ability to stay on the front lines of jazz composing while still maintaining a nonagressive energy is one of the things that makes Ben so special, and it comes through in his music. His musical selections reflect his versatility as a listener (as many of us are), and his own pieces show a growth in connection to the past and the future, birthing from the jazz workshop and concert series he helped create called the Jazz Composers Collective.
